Me at the christmas market in Aachen. I like Aachen!
I started this blog back in university days. It documented my overseas change in Europe. And now, I hope to use this to record my thoughts during my Jakarta job posting. Plenty of alone time here, in the apartment, in traffic jams, and I hope I can capture my thoughts on paper.

Here is Mag and me. See the flame behind, it is like a flame heater. supposed to keep us warm haha
This is the church outside the Cologne Haufbahnhof. 509 steps up to the top. very magnificent church
Hi my friends, I was in germany from thursday night till monday evening. I like germany and i shall narrate to you our plans for that weekend. will post pictures soon too.
Thursday night: take place to cologne-bonn airport. met SJ and Mag at the Central Train Station called Haupbahnhof. there are Haubahnhofs in Bonn, Cologne and in Berlin, and I really like them. they are like mega shopping centres, where they sell food as well. Very crowded and nice and warm too.
Met Mag in the kebab shop. the kebab was nice, prob cos i din have dinner. we din go to mag's house. instead, we roamed ard the bus station till it was time for us to board our berlin train at 143. Germans are ery particular about time. Their trains arrive on the dot and leave in exactly 2 and a half minute. I was constantly afraid we will not get onto the train or get off at the wrong stations, cos there are so many stations in between!
we tried to fall asleep in the compartments, but it was really hard as the train was an old train from bonn. before i forget, Mag is working in Bonn right now for DHL, and she has so kindly agreed to bring us ard during our stay. she is a really nice person, and she is coming to paris in dec and we can go out together again!
During the train ride, before I fell asleep, i looked out of the train and saw darkness. however, sometime i will see bright electricity stations/generators still working late into the nights and fuming from the chimneys. It looked really scary at night. It is like a nuclear plant. anytime it might explode. I did not like that.
We had to change at Hamburg Haubahnhof at 6am. it was cold and deserted. guess what? we dropped off one station early. panic. we had alighted at Hambug-Hofberg, instead of Hamburg Hbf. we asked a lady and she told us the next train heading toward Hamburg Hbf was in 2 minutes, and it will take about 10 min to reach. I was quite anxious as if this train does nt reach Hamburg on time, I would miss my next train to berlin! Thankfully we made it. train was newer and cleaner and we slept better.
reached berlin. had breakfast at their Hbf. it was nice. they have nice pastries and coffee. first thing was to go to the hostel. Alcatraz. what a name. nonetheless, the location was not that bad, although not right in the middle of the city. nice and clean and the ppl were friendly. germans are generally friendly and will help you if you ask them. In addition, they speak quite a lot of english as well. that is probably a factor why i liked germany.
berlin is a city mainly about WW2. this is probably one huge factor that set germany apart from other european cities, which mainly display christianity and churches. We went to the Jewish museum, Checkpoint Charlie, visited what is left of the Berlin Wall. I cannot imagine how ppl lived through the war, esp the Jews, and how ppl lived with the Wall. it is quite a sad thought if I were separated form my family and friends because of the wall. I read stories about how ppl smuggled across the wall on fake passports and russian soldiers with kind hearts who were replaced and probably killed.
returned to bonn on saturday. went with mag to cologne. cologne is a nice happening place. the first you se when you get out of the HBF is the humongus church. SJ and I climbed 509 steps upwards to the top of the church. view is not bad, except that it is all caged up. there is a river rhein that runs through germany, and i can see part of the river from the top of church.
we had dinner, ice cream, gluwein and cola kolsh. gluwein is hot alcohlic fruit drink. Many germans drink it when they are out in the cold in sidewalk cafes. Sj saw gluwein in vienna and we decided to try a cup. not too bad. kinda like sangria, which is Spanish red wine with fruits. just that gluwein is hot. Kolsh is beer brewed in Cologne and Cola Kolsh is coke with beer! i like the taste, probably because of the cola taste.
we had some sausages. think the trend now in germany is curry bratswurst. it is like curry ketchup. din taste too bad. at least alleviated some of my curry cravings.
Cologne's shopping is like europe shopping. Shops line the streets and christmas lights were up. too bad the christmas markets were not open yet.
Sunday, SJ and I went to the museum of republik of Germany. exhibits were in german and we had to decipher from the pictures. not too bad. we then went back for lunch with mag and her polish big brother. we kind chatted. it was nice having friends to talk to i must say.
we then took a train to Aachen. BTW we had to take a train from Bonn to Cologne. Public transport is ex in germany, and we spent quite a bit on transport. although the transport system in germany is based on trust - there are no gantries and u scan ur card on ur own, conductors will check and fine u 40 euros if u r dishonest. u get fined for jay walking across the road as well.
Aachen is one of the oldest cities in europe, according to our polish fren, Michal. I din know what to expect, but when we reached and walked around, boy was this old town charming. not bad for a tourist who really wants to step away from cities like berlin and cologne. the town is connected by little streets and the main roads are like 2 lanes wide in each opposing direction. not too many cars on the streets as well too. and we were here because of the CHRISTMAS market! I love the christmas market! it is like pasar malam. they were selling sausages, champinones mushrooms, cookies and candies and ppl were standing ard in the drizzle drinking gluwein. i bought some cookies, in preparation for christmas, and i will definitely visit christmas markets in barcelona (if any) and buy more food for christmas! Sj bought a big, humogous drumstick, which was dripping oil. and germans love fries, and their food deep-fried. I am staying off meat for a day - today i had like cooked salad with rice for dinner. been drinking lotsa tea to detox as well haha
train ride back took like a long time. 3 of us fell asleep and mag had to finish her work cos it was due on monday. really grateful to her for spending the weekend bringing us ard and having to burn the midnight oil to finish her work
monday we woke up at6am, courtesy of sj, who wanted to take a train out of bonn to visit shan shan shui shui. we did reach the place and found mountains and river rhein. however, it was not so much a touristy area, it was cold and we had walked a long distance without finding any villas or castle. we decided to head back to bonn and went shopping. DID YOU KNOW ZARA IN SPANIN IS CHEAPER THAN ZARA IN GERMANY? oh man, i cannot believe it. i shd buy all the zara stuff here and bring to germany to sell!
it was cold in germany with intermittent drizzles. think when the weather is cold enough, it will start snowing. that is why it snows, cos the intermittent rain freezes. i really used up all my winter clothings. it is a matter of how many layers, but also about covering my head and ears. ears turn cold most easily.
ok enough writing. will try to post some pictures now

here is a picture of the flea markets. many around. think i saw at least 3. and 1 caused a traffic jams. I think an additional reason is that christmas season is coming. is this the tourist season for barcelona? although i don't think so, but it seems like more tourists are coming again. it seems like a cycle.
I want to go back to Sentosa, to feel the sand on my feet and suntan!!!
Here is the port. Many people have probably seen it in my trip with my parents. but i just haven't seen the port in a long long time.
and so i walked into the barcelona world tour exhibition. here is a look at what they eat. ready made pasta. sounds like what i would have if i could find them in supermarkets.
This it the poor living quarters very long ago in the past. It is probably 2m by 5m or something like that. how to live?
In the museum, there were plenty of statues, of warriors. Catalonia was a warrior society once upon a time i believe.
See the sword? I don't know what is it, as the descriptions were only available in Catalan and Spanish.
This is part of a small boat that had sunk. It was on its way to deliver wheat and what not. I cannot imagine the sailors, having to sail across vast oceans on such a boat, to deliver goods. We really are leading a good life these days!
This is a balista, I believe, a catapult they use in war. I finally saw a war weapon!
This is a model of a Roman house. They showed many models of different houses. The houses of the general workforce were narrow and long and dirty. The Romans are aristocrats I believe, which is why they can afford such nice houses.
I think this is the place for baptism. This was from the section on how Christianity arrived in Catalonia, amidst economic and social unrest in Catalonia. Think Christianity arrived in Catalonia from Africa.
Here is a Muslim living quarters. Really very different from the European.
Hi everyone, today is 18 November. When I met my apartment mate in the kitchen, she told me in exactly 1 month, or 4 weeks and 2 days, she will be back in Denmark. She says that although life has gotten less boring after school started (both of us were complaining of having nothing to do before school started), she prefers going to school with her friends, as she stays in a student residence with 15 of her other friends. she prefers her friends to studies.
and come to think of it, I have approximately 1 more month in Barcelona before I bid farewell to this place. This is a marvellous place. I enjoy the place I am staying right now, and I thank my parents for helping me settle down in my room. School has been alright, although I could have met more friends. No matter. I miss the food in Singapore. That is all I can think of.
I think living away from home is a good thing. Just like how the Angmohs move out of their parents' house once they reach 18, we should be able to do that as well. Hostel life would be fun. Maybe I should move into SMU hostel and learn to live with other people. But the feeling is still different. Home would be a half hour bus ride away, instead of 20,000 miles away for me right now.
I m going to Germany this Thursday, and I borrowed a suitcase from my Taiwanese roommate to pack my sleeping bag and my winter stuff. I m very thankful to have her around in this household. She really helped me in my transition, as well as always being there to help me. She even brought me along to run her errands. Although I would not ask someone to go out with me if that person doesn't have anything to do, I m glad she did exactly the opposite of what I would have done. It made me bolder, and dare to explore more of Barcelona.
Speaking of Exploring, Today I visited the Museu d' Historia of Catalonia. It was an amazing museum, showing how Catalonia evolved from primates(as we all do) to being influenced by Christianity and Islam, how the Romans came to occupy Catalonia, how Barcelona staged sieges but failed on many occasions. No wonder Barcelona ppl are proud to call themselves part of Catalonia. I mean this is just a very superficial introduction, and I would like to learn more about the Catalan culture.
and so, I walked back home from the museum. walked past the port, where many ricj ppl parked their yachts. there wer plenty of flea markets on the weekends as well. Walked and walked. it is tiring, but i know it will give me a good night's sleep.
And I have been reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. It was a birthday present from my JC classmates, and I am grateful to them for giving me such a great book. It is a book abt how 2 Afghan girls came together. I won't spoil the story, but I cannot believe that sexual discrimination is worse than what I thought I already knew. I am very fortunate to be able to be who I am, to be the loud girl who yells her head off at everything. Oh man, when I read the book, I relaly was very sad. You should go read it, or come borrow from me. I haven't quite finished yet, but I will try to finish it by tonight. It has kept me hooked over the weekend. It is a great book. and since SJ is studying Gender Studies at Dauphine, this book may help him understand the female race better haha
and now, back to emerging economies such as Singapore, India and China. emerging Economies is a subject I m taking right now. Although I am not an economics student, I thought this was an interesting topic and I thought what better chance to take up such a course except for on an exchange. It has been an interesting class so far. We talk about China, India and Latin American countries, as well as Singapore. My prof once mentioned, he does not understand how the goverment intervention in economics could work hand in hand with the mechanics of market economy. well, it worked in China, and perhaps it worked in Singapore. but apparently angmohs cannot understand. Certain things just happen, don't they?

just when I thought I was getting used to the cold weather, the weather got colder. gah gah. I have an annoucement - my project got 100 marks for our report! it is 30% of the final mark. If i get full marks for the next project, I don't have to study for the exam! No la. but there is a story.
We initially got only 80/100. we thought is was very good already. but apparently average was 90 upong 100. We looked at our report which our prof returned. He minused 20 marks off because we did not include a particular sentence. and so we went to look for him and told him we have it in our excel spreadsheets and our slides. However, he only accepts reports and does not look at excel nor slides. we told him we included and he took back our report. and now he is giving 100 marks!
ok Songjie is in vienna. I am trying to finish my 10 page reflection essay. I should have brought my previous one from Singapore. but it is ok. 75% done i think. hope i finish it before I go to Germany on Thursday! I am so not prepared for the ice in germany!

Hola everybody!
My presentation and report is down, and so is my mid term exam. one more project, and 4 final exams grrr. haha but this is the only semester when I only need a pass/fail grade, so I shd not be too hung up over grades right?
Well for our project, we got 80/100. we thought it was good, turns out that it was one of the worst in class. If everyone has such good grades, does everyone get A for overall? I don't understand. But i do wish in singapore, we have such grading systems, where everyone can get A if u r good enough, instead of judging ppl by a bell curve.
weather is turning cold here. it is winter, but i think barcelona has the best weather in europe. it was 15 degrees this afternoon but really chilly. i bought a pair of gloves and a red turtleneck today. because next week I will be going to germany - cologne and berlin, where temperature is between 0 to 3 degrees. brrrr. this is a far cry from 15 degrees. how m i going to survive?
lionel - i checked out PSP Simpsons version. costs 199.90 euros

Us at Camp Nou!!! Songjie was looking at some pretty angmoh at the top of the stadium.
Here is Camp Nou. I believe SJ was trying to capture Lionel Messi, Theirry Henry and Ronaldino. kudos if u can spot them!
Us at the stadium. the guy above us covered his face with the magazine. it is a magazine everyone gets, on the soccer match, on the FC Barcelona team. and i was freezing.
Here is us at Madrid, in front of the Palace.
and us at Prado Museum. free entrance.
At Barcelona Beach. it is cold here, but barcelona is nice and sunny!
here is a picture of the big blue sea. see the yachts at the back?
here is another picture of the nice brown sand. actually sentosa's sand is nicer, but i think this is natural.
here we are at the picasso museum. this is picasso. do i look like him, with popping eyes?
i think songjie looks more like picasso

Hi everyone,
Songjie's coming to Barcelona tmr!! Today is like a holiday in Europe. All Saints' Day. so it is like a long weekend, cos ppl cancel classes on friday.
thankfully today the shops were open so i had a 6 hour walk. i walked to camp nou. sometimes, it is better to count on instincts than to follow directions. oh man. i would have reached faster if i had used my instincts. but i also travelled a different part of barcelona. and yes kiwii, christmas decor is up in the neighbourhoods! not in the city centre yet. mb i shd buy a christmas tree and put in my room!!!
haha previously, i would draw triangles and cut them out, paste them on the wall and decorate my own "christmas tree". it is always so fun. my mum will buy streamers and stick to the wall. my fav part is adding my own self-styled, self-cut star on top of the 'tree'. i do have some artistic talent left in me.
todays weather was so hot, i was walking in a tee-shirt and took off my jacket. ppl were in spaghetti strap. there were ppl running (which is a rare sight by now) and this guy brought his surfboard into the metro!!! sunglasses required. but at night it is cold. i wear long pants, long sleeve shirt and socks to bed and sleep in my sleeping bag.
and the long sleeve shirt i m wearing, is a red sweater from joan zeze many many years back. it is a winnie the pooh - red for me and blue for my brother. never had a chance to wear it till now, at the age of 21. haha but nonetheless, it really is handy, warm, roomy and prob good to sleep in (tonight is the first night)
and ya Songjie's coming tmr!!! we r gonna watch football match at camp nou this sunday with my new zealand fren! we are all so excited, cos it seems like the cheap tix are almost sold out. and trust me, the stadium is very big. can house 100,000 ppl. i know cos i walked round it today.
tata and good night. have a good weekend! (plenty of work to be done after that - stressed by sch work. can do if i forget it for a weekend)
